FAQ #1

5 min read

Occasionally somebody asks for something - and sometimes more people are interested in the same topic, so I decided to share one of them with you all ;)

:O_o: Canon 50mm/1.8 lenses & macro/close-up?

I have a question, that canon 50mm 1.8 lens you use, how close can you get to the subject? I like to take a lot of macro (not super close) photographs and wanted to get this lens, but was unsure of how close you could get the photo to be.

Also, I noticed one of your photos said you had the lens reversed? What does that do? And..if it makes the lens more macro, it would be cool if you could let me know what thats all about.

You are right, the EF 50mm/1.8 are great lenses - pretty cheap, but high quality. Unfortunatelly, the lens itself is not constructed for macro, not even for close-up photography - the minimum focus distance is 1.5' (0.45m), which is too much.

Nevertheless, as you have said, it's ideal for the reverse lenses method. You can read something about it here: stephenelliot.com/2007/05/15/r…

If you use just this one lens reversed, you'll get 1:2 magnification, I think. But if you'll use another 50mm lenses (first one connected to camera as normal, another one reversed in front of the first one), you'll get 1:1! ;)

You can buy the reversion rings and reductions all over the internet pretty cheap, or you can make them yourself from some old filters and lens caps.

You should be beware of dust, which can get into your camera quite easily :(

Also, you can buy some extension rings and you'll get the same, maybe even bigger magnification. I've bought them myself for few bucks about month ago (and I' desperatelly waiting for spring ;)).

No matter what you'll decide to try, I guess you'll think of buying some macro flash too. I do too ;)

aka Critique at deviantART

It's hard, when someone tries to say what he thinks. Especially when it comes to art.

I've found comment of some girl on #MacroPhotographers group, in which she was concerned why was one of her (cite) "high quality macro pictures" (/cite) rejected from the group.

I was curious to see the photo, so I've clicked the link.

I saw the photo and I've made my own mind about it.

Then came the moment of my life mistake - I've said it to her, just wrote down what I saw.

She accused me that someone has sent me, to say those lies...

You can read the rest of it here.

I'm really sorry for what she said.

Seems like some people just don't want to hear anything wrong about their art.

I haven't known her until today and I really don't know what she's talking about.

I think that I'm skilled enough to say if the photo is blurry or not, but now I guess that my own opinion is just not welcome.

:(

OK, so I've passed my final exams (Czech, English, Civics & History)! I'm so happy but also pretty tired. All I want for now is to sleep :D
Now I have nearly four months of free time, I don't even know what to do ;)
